The fundamental premise of sex magic is the concept that the sexual energy, or libido, of the human organism is the most potent force it contains, and harnessing the unique states
that arise through sexual activity provides a special experiential conduit for the transcendence of nominal reality.
Two fundamental applications of sexual magic concern the use of the orgasm. Some schools of thought base their use of sex upon the power that the orgasmic release of the
sexual energy contains. An example of this type of sex magic is the Great Rite of Wicca, a ritual that involves either symbolic or actual sexual intercourse. This union between the High Priestess and the High Priest represents the union between the Maiden Goddess and the Lover God.
Paschal Beverly Randolph's magico-sexual theories and techniques formed the basis of much of the teachings
of The Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor although it is not clear whether or not Randolph himself was ever actually associated with the Order.[1]
It was Carl Kellner, the founder of the O.T.O., who claimed to have learned the techniques of sex magic from three
adepts in this art.[2] Beginning in 1904, references to these secrets, Kellner, and the O.T.O. began appearing in "an obscure German masonic
periodical called Oriflamme."[2] In 1912, the editors of Oriflamme announced:
“
Our
order possesses the key which opens up all Masonic and Hermetic secrets, namely, the teachings of sexual magic, and this teaching explains, without exception,
all the secrets of Freemasonry and all systems of religion.[2]
Aleister Crowley was one of the first people in modern times to publicly advocate the practice
of sexual magic. He rejected the prudish attitude of the Victorian era towards sex and took delight in shocking British society by explicitly including masturbation and homosexuality among his magical techniques.[3]
According to Hugh Urban, Crowley is "of profound importance for the understanding of modern Western spirituality and
culture as a whole." He goes on to note the threefold importance of Crowley's work, namely:[3]
his emphasis on sex as the supreme magical power
the integration of his in-depth studies of Hinduism and Buddhism into his teachings
his position as one of the most influential figures in the 20th century revival of magic
Crowley believed that the suppression of the sexual instinct was the root cause of the violence
and other evils of the modern world. He wrote in his Confessions of Aleister Crowley that,
“
The
battle will rage most fiercely around the question of sex... Mankind must learn that the sexual instinct is in its true nature
ennobling. The shocking evils which we all deplore are principally due to the perversion produced by suppressions. The feeling
that it is shameful and the sense of sin cause concealment, which is ignoble, and internal conflict which creates distortion,
neurosis, and ends in explosion. We deliberately produce an abscess, and wonder why it is full of pus, why it hurts, why it
bursts in stench and corruption...
”
“
The
Book of the Law solves the sexual problem completely. Each individual has an absolute right to satisfy his sexual instinct
as is physiologically proper for him. The one injunction is to treat all such acts as sacraments. One should not eat as the
brutes, but in order to enable one to do one's will. The same applies to sex. We must use every faculty to further the one
object of our existence.[4]
”
Crowley and Ordo Templi Orientis
Crowley became involved with Theodor Reuss and his Ordo Templi Orientis following the publication of The Book of Lies between 1912-1913.[5] According to Crowley's account, Reuss approached him and accused him of having revealed the innermost (sexual) secret
of O.T.O. in one of the cryptic chapters of this book. When it became clear to Reuss that Crowley had done so unintentionally,
he initiated Crowley into the IX° of O.T.O. and appointed him "Sovereign Grand Master General of Ireland, Ioana and all the
Britains."[3][6][5]
While the O.T.O. had from its inception with included the teaching of sex magick in the highest degrees, when Crowley became head of the Order, he expanded on these teachings
and associated them with different degrees as follows:[7]
VIII°: masturbatory or autosexual magical techniques were taught, referred as the Lesser
Work of Sol
IX°: heterosexual magical techniques were taught
XI°: anal intercourse techniques as sexual and magical were taught
One of the most well-known O.T.O. rituals, the Gnostic Mass, denoted by Crowley as the central ritual of the Order, is a complete exposition on sexual magic
in symbolic form. The central formula of this ritual, repeated numerous times throughout the text, is the Gnostic formula IAO.
Crowley wrote extensively on the topic of sex magic. Some of these works were published and
made available to the general public, others were secret and could only be obtained by initiates of Ordo Templi Orientis.

The crux of Samael Aun Weor's teachings is what he calls white sexual magic, the paramount
tenet of which is to conclude the act of coition without orgasm or ejaculation from either the man or woman.[9] Thus, instead of the sexual energy being released in a spasm, this energy undergoes sexual transmutation via willpower and the sacrifice of desire.[10] According to Weor, the magnetic induction produced by crossing the active and passive creative organs - namely the phallus and uterus - causes lunar, solar and akashic currents to flow through the Brahmanic cord (the ida, pingala and sushumna respectively) of the couple.[11][12] This current provides an active connection between the magnetic center at the root of the nose (pineal gland, Ajna chakra) and solar and lunar principles located within the seminal system at the muladhara chakra.[13] The transmuted energy, through willpower, is populated by "billions christic atoms"[10] that when rising meet the pure akasa of the triune Brahmanic cord, igniting it and through many years of work causing
the ascent of the kundalini through the thirty-three chambers or degrees (33°) of the spinal medulla.[10][14]
Along with the ascent of the kundalini, the crystallization of the "Solar Bodies" are formed
due to the transmutation occurred through white sexual magic.[15][16] The solar bodies are the four aspects of the sacred Merkabah of Arcanum Seven.[17] In sum the solar bodies are the christic vehicles of emotion, mind and will.[18] Furthermore, because sexuality is both a creator and destroyer, ŕ la Shiva-Shakti, through sexual magic Samael Aun Weor indicates that one can eliminate any previously comprehended
psychological defect.[11] In other words, through sexual magic the radical removal of the egocentric vehicles can be achieved - which are the
animalistic or inferior vehicles of emotion, mind, and will related to one's evolutive animal transmigrations prior to reaching the humanoid state.[19] Thus, through the death of the ego and the birth of the solar bodies Samael Aun Weor states that one can be elevated
to the angelic state and beyond.[20]
Samael Aun Weor asserts that when the orgasm is reached the christic atoms are expelled and
replaced, via genital orgasmic contraction, with impure "atoms" of fornication.[21] When, through willpower the akashic current meets the atoms of fornication, instead of rising, the energy is rejected
by the divine triad (atman-buddhi-manas) and is forced downwardly into the atomic infernos of the human being, forming the
tail of satan (the kundabuffer, or negatively polarized kundalini). The repetition of this act in time divorces
the divine triad from the inferior quaternary (physical, vital, astral and mental bodies) through the
severing of the antakarana. Samael Aun Weor refers to any type of sexual magic that uses the orgasm for spiritual
or magical purposes as black sexual magic, and those who perform it are black magicians that acquire negative powers.[22][23]
In the view of spiritual alchemy, making the philosopher's stone would bring enlightenment
upon the maker and conclude the Great Work.[1]
In alchemy
Alchemists once thought a key component of the stone was a mythical element named carmot. The
element is no longer believed to exist according to modern scientific knowledge.[2][3]
Alchemy itself is mostly an original concept and science practiced in the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and India. However, the concept of ensuring youthful health originated in China, while the concept of transmutating one metal into a more precious one (silver or gold) originated
from the theories of the 8th century Arab alchemist, Jabir ibn Hayyan (Latinized as 'Geber'). He analysed each Aristotelian element in terms of the four basic qualities of hotness, coldness, dryness, and
moistness. Fire was both hot and dry, earth cold and dry, water cold and moist, and air hot and moist. He further theorized
that every metal was a combination of these four principles, two of them interior and two exterior.
From this premise, it was reasoned that the transmutation of one metal into another could be
effected by the rearrangement of its basic qualities. This change would presumably be mediated by a substance, which came
to be called al-iksir in Arabic (from which the Western term "elixir" is derived). It is often considered to exist as a dry red
powder (also known as al-Kibrit al-Ahmar الكبريت الأحمر
-- red sulphur) made from a legendary stone — the "philosopher's stone"[citation needed].
In the 11th century, there was a debate among Muslim chemists on whether the transmutation of substances was possible. A leading opponent was Avicenna, who discredited the theory of transmutation of substances:
"Those of the chemical craft know well that no change can be effected in the different species
of substances, though they can produce the appearance of such change."[4]
According to legend, the 13th-century scientist and philosopher Albertus Magnus is said to have discovered the philosopher's stone and passed it to his pupil Thomas Aquinas, shortly before his death circa 1280. Magnus does not confirm he discovered the stone in his
writings, but he did record that he witnessed the creation of gold by "transmutation."[5]
The 16th-century Swiss alchemist Philippus Paracelsus believed in the existence of alkahest which he thought to be an undiscovered element from which all other elements (earth, fire, water,
air) were simply derivative forms. Paracelsus believed that this element alkahest was, in fact, the philosopher's stone.
Jabir's theory was based on the concept that metals like gold and silver could be hidden in
alloys and ores, from which they could be recovered by the appropriate chemical treatment. Jabir himself is believed
to be the inventor of aqua regia, a mixture of muriatic (hydrochloric) and nitric acids, one of the few substances that can dissolve gold (and which is still often used for gold recovery and purification).
Gold was particularly valued as a metal that would not rust, tarnish, corrode or otherwise
grow corrupt. Since the philosopher's stone would turn a corruptible base metal to incorruptible gold, naturally it would
similarly transform human beings from mortal (corruptible) to immortal (incorruptible). One of many theories was that gold
was a superior form of metal, and that the philosopher's stone was even purer and superior to gold, and if combined with lesser
metals would turn them into superior gold as well.[citation needed]
A mystical text published in the 17th century called the Mutus Liber appears to be a symbolic instruction manual for concocting a philosopher's stone. Called the
"wordless book", it was a collection of 15 illustrations
Contemporary interpretations
The Latin American spiritual teacher Samael Aun Weor stated that the philosopher's stone is synonymous with the symbol of the stone found in many
other spiritual and religious traditions, such as the stone Jacob rests his head upon, the cubic stone of Freemasonry, and the rock upon which Christ lays the foundation of the temple.[6]
“
For
in Scripture it says:
"See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the
builders rejected has become the capstone," and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They
stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. - 1 Peter 2: 6-8
”
He states that this "stone of stumbling" and "rock of offence" is the creative-sexual energy,
which in Kabbalah is Yesod ("foundation") that must be transmuted through sexual alchemy. It is said to be rejected by the "builders," meaning those who seek spiritual edification, because
they reject the transmutation of sexual energy, and instead use it to achieve sensual pleasure.[7]
In art and entertainment
The philosopher's stone has been subject, inspiration, or plot feature of innumerable artistic
works: novels, comics stories, movies, animations, and even musical compositions. It is also a popular item in many video games. The following is a very incomplete list.
There are four maidens in the pack
relating of course to both the elements and the Hallows. This card depicts thecastle of maidens, often represented in the grail legends as being places of enchantment.
I don't know how it translates
into women's lib theology, although I have had it mentioned to me that women are often seen in a negative light in the grail
legends. It is certainly no surprise that the feminine element in the dynamics of the cycles of Divinity have been lost, misaligned
or else overlaid with a Patriarchal emphasis. One way around
this is to use a template and there is a very good restorative one in "Raising the Queen of Heaven” by Glen Knape. Based on the early Theosophical models of the Seven Planes of the Cosmos and also the Qabalistic Tree of Life - here the
poles of Divinity are seen in relation to a magnetic field between Heaven (All Father) and Earth (Divine Mother). In between,
if we consider a bar magnet analogy, the magnetic field flows outwards from North to South and then internally from South
to North. In this way the magnetic field of consciousness can be seen as both the Divine Son as out-breath, (carries energy
from Father to Mother), and in-breath as Daughter carries energy from Mother to Father.
In the grail legends then, we have
the symbolic return of the Divine Daughter as Maiden, who's role should be to rescue the Son from the confines of matter (Mother)
and return him to the source that is the Father. Traditionally though it has been turned around in such a way that the Knights
always seem to "rescue" the Maidens.
What complicates things further when
using this symbolic framework is that there are really Seven Planes of the etheric or magnetic field and the Mother aspect
is again the Third one down (Atma). The fourth plane (Buddhic) symbolises the Heart for instance (since the seven planes are
representative, although not exactly aligned with the chakras) while the three planes either side are triads consisting of
the three Spiritual worlds above and three material worlds (physical, astral, mental) below respectively. If the grail knight
represents the Divine Son, arising from the Spiritual and descending into matter, then the Divine Daughter IS the way shower
to the Grail, that is in effect of the third etheric plane (the transcendent Mother in Heaven). The third etheric plane,
for example, could be represented by the Qabalistic third Sephiroph - Binah, or, by the Empress card (Arthurian Tarot - Guinevere)
in the Major Arcana.
In the grail legends, wherever Maidens
occur they are likely to be aspects of the Earth Mother as Divine Daughter. In Qabalah, the magical image for the tenth Sephiroph
- Malkuth (earth) is a young woman crowned and throned. The Sepher Yetzirah gives : "The Tenth Path is the Resplendent
Intelligence, because it is exalted above every head, and sits on the throne of BINAH”
Here again, Binah is the Mother who
sorrows for the absent Persephone (the etheric-life force) who spends half of the year in Hades (ninth Sephiroph - Yesod),
while winter occurs on earth. Again, according to Glen Knape, these were also patriarchal distortions that do throw a spanner
in the works of the true cycle. This is since the Divine Son as Hades has now (fallen from grace) become trapped in the Underworld
and is portrayed as a ruler there. He has also abducted the Divine Daughter, who cannot re-ascend back to Heaven (The Father).
As half measure she is trapped in the shadow worlds between Malkuth and Yesod, in a sort of half cycle of death and rebirth.
Regarding the grail legends, however,
and particularly the Arthurian Tarot; the suits of spear, grail, stone and sword are indeed of Malkuth (earth), which is Qabalistically
the Sphere of the Elements. It is also why there are ten cards per suit. They relate also geographically to the four cardinal
directions of which these elemental correspondences can be drawn. Spear, South; Sword, Air; Grail, West and Stone, North.
In this way the Divine Daughter or queen of earth now has four aspects or “dresses“ and these correspond also
to the seasons. In this way various dramas can be played out, whereas in Qabalah, the Divine Daughter ascended would come
to represent the unveiled Isis of the seventh Sephiroph- Netzach. The negative polarity of this could then be reflected in
the card grail seven, whereby the unveiling of Isis is rather more of a glamour, as used in most modern advertising.
The four suits, remember, are still being played out in Malkuth, which is supposed to be veiled. It is perhaps one reason
why Muslim women use veils to represent this idea.
The sword maiden, in
one of her Malkuth aspects, appears as an ugly maiden, who admonishes Perceval for his failure at the court of the Fisher
King, to ask the grail question. She points out to him, with logical accuracy, the exact repercussions that his unconscious
incompetence has had upon the land, albeit turning to waste. Furthermore, she goes on to announce to the rest of the Knights
at Arthur's court, opportunities to win honour, have adventure and encounter chivalrous deeds. One of these adventures involves
rescuing a besieged maiden from the peak of Montesclaire, thus winning the greatest honour and the ability to safely gird
on 'the Sword with the Strange Straps.'
The spear maiden is associated
with the element of fire; being also the Manasic fire - born of the Buddhic earth of primal darkness. In this respect we find
her roots in the myth of Ariadne, who gave to the hero Theseus, the intuitive thread that would guide him through the labyrinth.
In the grail legends we meet her again in the form of a mysterious girl who at first snubs Perceval and when he tries to follow
her, he looses her in the pitch black darkness of the night. He then sees a vision of a supernatural light, which burns like
five lit candles, lighting up the forest. When it is daybreak Perceval catches up with the maiden, who has now changed in
favour towards him and gives to Perceval a ring and a white mule, that she says, will lead him to the grail. The ring is of
course, another aspect of the spear Hallow.
The stone maiden is said
to represent Dindrane, the sister of Perceval, who sacrifices her blood to heal a leper, so that the knights could continue
on their quest to the grail:
"The travellers boarded the ship,
intent to complete the task of finding the Holy Grail. After leaving the ship, they encounter a castle with a mistress. Dindrane
decides to give her own blood to the lady in order to heal the lady's leprosy, and dies in doing so. She left directions that
her body was to be set adrift in a boat (without a crew) to float to the holy city of. Lancelot finds the ship that carried
her corpse and Dindrane is buried in Palais Esperitel. Galahad, along with Bors, later find the vessel containing her body
when they land on the port of Sarras (after which they proceed to find the Grail)" (from Wikipedia)
The grail maiden is likely
to occur in many places, for instance as an echo of the once Hyperborean tradition of oracular prophecy at sacred wells and
springs. In Perceval she is the maiden who hasn't laughed for seven years until the fool Perceval arrives at court and she
suddenly bursts into laughter and prophesies that he will be the finest of knights and achieve the grail.
Finally, regarding the maidens'
who carry the grail into and through the court of the Fisher King; it is really another patriarchal overlay, for the wounded
Fisher King is really the Earth Mother.
The pineal gland was the last endocrine gland to have its function discovered. Its location deep in
the brain seemed to indicate its importance. This combination led to its being a "mystery" gland with myth, superstition and
even metaphysical theories surrounding its perceived function.
The pineal gland is occasionally associated with the sixth chakra (also called Ajna or the third eye
chakra in yoga). It is believed by some to be a dormant organ that can be awakened to enable "telepathic" communication.
In the physical body the eye views objects upside down. It sends the image of what it observes to the
brain which interprets the image and makes it appear right side-up to us.
But the human body has another physical eye whose function has long been recognized by humanity. It
is called the 'Third Eye' which in reality is the Pineal Gland. It is long thought to have mystical powers.
Many consider it the Spiritual Third Eye, our Inner Vision.
It is located in the geometric center of the brain. This correlates to the location of the Great Pyramid in the center of the physical planet.
The Pineal Gland is about the size of a pea, and is in the center of the brain in a tiny cave behind
and above the pituitary gland which lies a little behind the root of the nose. It is located directly behind the eyes, attached
to the third ventricle.
The true function of this mysterious gland has long been contemplated by philosophers and Spiritual
Adepts. Ancient Greeks believed the pineal gland to be our connection to the Realms of Thought.
Rene Descartes called it the Seat of the Soul, believing it is unique in the anatomy of the human brain
in being a structure not duplicated on the right and left sides. This observation is not true, however; under a microscope
one finds the pineal gland is divided into two fine hemispheres.
This gland is activated by Light, and it controls the various biorhythms of the body. It works in harmony
with the hypothalamus gland which directs the body's thirst, hunger, sexual desire and the biological clock that determines
our aging process.
When the pineal gland awakens one feels a pressure at the base of the brain. This pressure will often
be experienced when connecting to higher frequency. A head injury can also activate the Third Eye - Pineal Gland.
While the physiological function of the pineal gland has been unknown until recent times, mystical
traditions and esoteric schools have long known this area in the middle of the brain to be the connecting link between the
physical and spiritual worlds. Considered the most powerful and highest source of ethereal energy available to humans, the
pineal gland has always been important in initiating supernatural powers. Development of psychic talents has been closely
associated with this organ of higher vision.
The third eye can see beyond the physical
as is looks out through the chakrasystem when we meditate or look for answers from higher frequencies.
The pineal gland contains a complete map of the visual field of the eyes
and it plays several significant roles in human functioning.
There is a pathway from the retinas to the hypothalamus called the retinohypothalamic tract. It brings
information about light and dark cycles to a region of the hypothalamus called the suprachiasmatic nucleus(SCN). From the
SCN, nerve impulses travel via the pineal nerve (sympathetic nervous system) to the pineal gland. These impulses inhibit the
production of melatonin. When these impulses stop (at night, when light no longer stimulates the hypothalamus), pineal inhibition
ceases and melatonin is released. The pineal gland is therefore a photosensitive organ and an important timekeeper for the
human body.
Retinal research done with hamsters demonstrates another center for melatonin production. Located in
the retina, this center implies that the eyes have their own built in circadian timepiece. This retinal system is distinct
from the brains body clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Biologists found that they could throw the retinal rhythms
out of sync with other circadian cycles. They also found that they could set and reset the retinal clock even when the SCN
was destroyed.
The retinal clock produces (stimulates the production of?) melatonin. Researchers are now looking for
the exact location (s) of this clock in the human eye (and expect to find it). No one yet knows what the separate clock is
for or how it relates to the SCN.
In some lower vertebrates the Epiphysis Cerebri - Pineal Gland - has a well-developed eye-like
structure; in others though not organized as an eye, if functions as a light receptor. In lower vertebrates, the pineal gland
has an eye like structure and it functions as a light receptor and is considered by some to be the evolutionary forerunner
of the modern eye.
The gland weighs little more than 0.1 gram. The gland is large in children and begins to shrink with
the onset of puberty. It appears to play a major role in sexual development, hibernation in animals, metabolism, and seasonal
breeding. In humans it affects circadian rhythms, sleep patterns (melatonin levels increase at night), and is implicated in
seasonal affective disorder. The abundant melatonin levels in children is believed to inhibit sexual development. When puberty
arrives, melatonin production is reduced.
The pineal gland secretes melanin during times of relaxation and visualization. As we are created by
electromagnetic energy - and react to EM energy stimuli around us - so does the pineal gland.
When activated, the pineal gland becomes the line of communication with the higher planes. The crown
chakra reaches down until its vortex touches the pineal gland. Prana, or pure energy, is received through this energy center
in the head. With Practice the vibration level of the astral body is raised, allowing it to separate from the physical.
To activate the 'third eye' and perceive higher dimensions, the pineal gland and the pituitary body
must vibrate in unison, which is achieved through meditation and/or relaxation. When a correct relationship is established
between personality, operating through the pituitary body, and the soul, operating through the pineal gland, a magnetic field
is created. The negative and positive forces interact and become strong enough to create the 'light in the head.' With this
'light in the head' activated, astral projectors can withdraw themselves from the body, carrying the light with them.
Astral travel, and other occult abilities, are closely associated with the development of the 'light
in the head'. After physical relaxation, concentration upon the pineal gland is achieved by staring at a point in the middle
of the forehead. Without straining the muscles of the eye, this will activate the pineal gland and the 'third eye'. Beginning
with the withdrawal of the senses and the physical consciousness, the consciousness is centered in the region of the pineal
gland. The perceptive faculty and the point of realization are centralized in the area between the middle of the forehead
and the pineal gland. The trick is to visualize, very intently, the subtle body escaping through the trap door of the brain.
A popping sound may occur at the time separation of the astral body in the area of the pineal gland.
Visualization exercises are the first step in directing the energies in our inner systems to activate
the 'third eye'. The magnetic field is created around the pineal gland, by focusing the mind on the midway point between the
pineal gland and the pituitary body. The creative imagination visualizes something, and the thought energy of the mind gives
life and direction to this form.
'Third eye' development, imagination, and visualization are important ingredients in many methods to
separate from the physical form. Intuition is also achieved through 'third eye' development. Knowledge and memory of the astral
plane are not registered in full waking consciousness until the intuition becomes strong enough. Flashes of intuition come
with increasing consistency as the 'third eye' as activated to a greater degree, through practice.
The pineal gland corresponds with divine thought after being touched by the vibrating light of Kundalini.
Kundalini starts its ascent towards the head center after responding to the vibrations from the 'light in the head.'
The light is located at the top of the sutratma, or 'soul thread', which passes down from the highest plane of our being into
the physical vehicle.
The 'third eye,' or 'eye of Siva,' the organ of spiritual vision, is intimately related to karma, as
we become more spiritual in the natural course of evolution.
As human beings continue to evolve further out of matter, on the journey from spirit to matter back
to spirit, the pineal gland will continue to rise from its state of age-long dormancy, bringing back to humanity astral capacities
and spiritual abilities.
At certain brainwave frequencies, a sense of ego boundary vanishes. In the theta state, we are resting
deeply and still conscious, at the threshold of drifting away from or back into conscious awareness. As the brain enters deeper
states, our consciousness is less concerned with the physical state, our 'third eye' is active, and separation becomes natural.
Many native traditions and mystical practices refer to the ability of 'seeing,' or being aware of energy fields at higher
levels. This abstract awareness is much more subjective and does not involve the normal level of mundane consciousness, which
is mostly concerned with self-identity. This 'seeing' refers to the sight of the 'third eye'.
Consciousness is raised from an emotional nature into an illumined awareness when the pineal gland
is lifted from dormancy. If the pineal gland is not yet fully developed, it will be in the course of evolution. When our sense
of ego and personality are set aside and we keep our mental energy intact, we can become conscious of the non-physical, our
inner self, the subconscious, through different practices to activate the 'light in the head.'
The symbol of the All-Seeing-Eye has always been part of Earth's creational mythologies and mysteries. As
all of reality is a metaphor - there are many connected to the symbol of the eye.

"Impossible Dream"
To dream the impossible dream To
fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow And to run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable
wrong And to love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This
is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far To fight for the right Without question
or pause To be willing to march, march into hell For that heavenly cause And I know If I'll only be true To
this glorious quest That my heart Will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest And the world will be better
for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach
the unreachable, the unreachable, The unreachable star And I'll always dream The impossible dream Yes, and
I'll reach The unreachable star
This is the first english translation of Dr. Annette Zgoll’s german, academic
translation of Nin-me-sara found at the beginning of her book, "Der Rechtsfall der En-hedu-Ana im Lied Nin-me-sara"(1997), "En-Hedu-Ana's Lawsuit in the poem Nin-me-sara". It is a combined effort between myself and Tatjana
Dorsch, who has very accessibly translated the whole book for me. It is the most recent, updated translation of Enheduana’s
most famous poem since Dr. William Hallo’s grounbreaking translation, "The Exaltation of Inanna" in 1968. Dr. Zgoll has generously given of her time and corrected it and allowed me to post it here.
1. Queen of all the ME, too numerous to count, rising forth as resplendent light [1]
2. Woman [2], most driven, clothed in frightening radiance, loved by An and Uras,
3. An's nugig [3], you are above all the great SUHkese-breastplates,
4. You, who love the right aga-crown [4], who is suited for the en-priest-hood,
5. empowered
with all of its all seven ME --
6. my queen! You are the guardian of the great ME!
7. You have uplifted the
ME, you have held the Me in your hand.
8 You have gathered the ME, you have clasped the ME to your chest.
9
Like a dragon you cast venom upon the enemy land.
10 In the regions where you thundered like Iskur, Asnan no longer
exists because of you
11 Flooding waters surge down on such an enemy land
12 You are the supreme one in Heaven
and Earth, you are their Inana!
[1] This
can also connote through homophone and homonym: "Queen of the countless battles, (as) a raging storm rising"
[2] Or we can read the sign of 'munus-zi' as 'zirru': “female”( bird). This is a title
of Ningal, that is of Enheduanna. - Dr. Joan Westenholz has identified zirru as a title of the goddess Ningal, used
by Enheduanna in her article, “Enheduanna, En-Priestess, Hen of Nanna,Spouse of Nanna”. In this article she deduces
that Enheduanna is endowed with this title of zirru to convey that she is the human embodiment of Ningal.
[3] nugig is a title of Inanna in the context of the exercise of power or the broadening of power,
important in the context of legitimization of rulers. -One of Dr. Zgoll’s theories is that Enheduanna herself,
as en-priestess of Nanna in Ur, is endowed with the power to legitimate a king’s rule.
[4] I.e., Inanna loves the aga-crown/cap (object). It can also be read as: the aga-crown/cap (subject)
loves Inanna, whereby then the aga metonomycal stands for Nanna, compare chapter 3.4.-- The attribute “right”
is the same word as in line 2 “driven” , it can be understood here also as a replacement for ‘thirst for
creating’. (dictionary definition of metonymy- one word is put for another that it
suggests; as, we say, a man keeps a good table instead of good food; we read Virgil, that is, his poems; a man has a warm
heart, that is, warm affections)
13 Unceasing raging fire, you shower down upon the land of Sumer
14 Queen, whom An gave
the ME, you ride atop a beast
15 Authorized by the fate-determining word of An, you utter words.[5]
16
The great rites are yours-- who else could fathom their meaning?
17 Destroyer of enemy lands- you empowered
the storm
18. Beloved of Enlil, you let terror reign over the land of Sumer
19. You stood prepared, waiting
to fulfill the orders of An
20. My Queen! All enemy lands bow down at the sound of your roar!
21. Under
your fearsome radiance, your terrible glare and storm, the people
22. turned their steps toward you in mute dread
23.
-- of all the ME, you had grasped the most terrible and deeply stirring--
24. Mankind [6] opened the gateway of
tears, on your account [7]
25. They must walk the path to the house of all the great laments, on your account.[8]
[5] Or: “Who, authorized through the fate-determining mouth of An, says
words”.
[6] In reference to nam-lu-ulu (mankind, men) line 21.
[7] literally: “to you” (or
because of you)
[8] literally: “to you” (or because of you)
26. Because of you [9], all [10] had been ripped away even before the battle.
27. My Queen!
With your strength a tooth can even crush flint [11]!
28. Like an invasive storm you barge in.
29. With the
howling storm you howl.
30. With Iskur you thunder.
31. With raging thunderstorm you do exhaust,
32.
while your own foot has never yet tired.
33. With the harp of laments one [12] strikes up a song of lamentation
34.
My Queen! The Anuna, the great gods,
35. Like terrified [13] bats, fluttered away from you to the top of the mounds
of ruins.
36. They could not withstand your devastating glance [14].
37. They cannot stand up against the fright
on your brow.
39. Your hostile heart has become too violent to
pacify!
40. Queen, has your soul [16] really been satisfied? Queen, is your heart really now filled with joy?
41.
Your rage does not cool, great daughter of Suen! [17]
42. Queen, greater than the enemy land-- who would dare take
away any of your territory? [18]
43 You take the ‘mountain range’ [19] into your territory: its Asnan
is no longer.[20]
44 Fire was set against its great gate. [21]
45 Blood flowed in its river for you, its
people had to drink it for you. [22]
46 Their troops, all gathered together, [23] had to surrender themselves to
you.
47 Even their elite troups, united together, had to be struck down for you.
48 Even their strong men-
all of them, had to stand before you [24]
49 In the town’s places of pleasure, a storm rages.
50 They
hunt down their best men as captives for you.
[15] Literally
‘cool’ with connotation ‘refresh’.
[16] Literally also “liver”, “stomach’.
[17]
Another translation possibility: “Rage (glowing) and not cooling, great daugher of Suen!”
[18] Literally:
“your earth”.
[19] Compare chapter 3.6.2.
[20] Some texts: “When you.... the ‘mountain
ranges’” LaC: “you looked angrily upon the enemy land , ....”; UnH “When you looked angrily
at the enemy land”.
[21] UrB: “in ihre (their, her, your) great temple”.
[22] 2 text segments:
“they have nothing to drink”.
[23] Other translation possibility, also in the following lines” “in
their fear”.
[24] NiW: “stood in front of you”.
51. The city, which would not say “This land is yours!” [25]
52. where the people
did not say “He is your loving father!”--
53. He has spoken your fate-determining word [26]: the territory
is restored beneath your foot.
54. Then care [27] disappears from within, from their stall.
55. That woman
there - she no longer speaks of love with her spouse.
56. At night she no longer holds counsel with him.
57.
She no longer reveals her innermost self to him , which holds the hope of future life[28].
58. Aggressive wild
cow, great daughter of Suen,
59. Queen, greater than heaven- who would dare take any of your territories away from
you?
[25] NiMM and LaB: “The enemy city, which
has not said “To you”
[26] Variant: “ spoken from your fate-determining word”.
[27]
Another word variant yielded the translation: “from the mother love”. Literal translation: “Then... the
foot is slipped”.
[28] Literally: “the fate-determining thing of her insides”.
60 The Great queen (NIN.GAL) of queens, born for the rightful [29] ME,
61 born of a fate-laden
body, you are even greater than your own mother,
62 full of wisdom, foresight, queen over all lands,
63.
who allows existence to many, I now strike up your fate-determining song!
64 All powerful divinity, suitable for
the ME, that which you have said magnificently is the most powerful! [31]
65. Of unfathomable heart [32], oh highly
driven woman [33], of radiant heart, your ME [34], I will list for you now!
66. Into my fate-determining Gipar [35],
I had entered for you.
67. I, the en-priestess, I, En-hedu-Ana [36].
68. While I carried the basket, I struck
up the song of jubilation,
69. as though I had not lived there [38], they offered the death sacrifice. [37]
70.
I came close to the light, there the light became scorching to me.
71. I came close to the shadow, there it was
veiled by a storm.
72. My sweet mouth became venomous [39].
73. That with which I gave delight, turned to dust.
[29] See the opening of line 4: the adjective “right”
also comprises the connotation of true powerfulness.
[30] The goddess Ningal. Literally: “as her own mother”.
[31]
Simultaneously valid to the version: ”What you have spoken in as great a manner, is the ‘most powerful’.”,
i.e. “No one can become more praised than you”.
[32] By the use of “heart” the connotation
of “Anger” from the context of line 38-41is not to be overlooked.
[33] NiRR: ‘zirru’, “(bird)woman”;
this version is also possible in the parallel text. It is a title of Ningal, that is, Enheduanna; compare with chapter
6.1.
[34]NiRR: “the fate-deciding ME.” LaB, UnC: ”the rightful ME”.
[35] A part of the
temple complex of the moongod in Ur, which encompasses the residence of the en-Priestess and the shrine of Ningal.
[36]
The name means translated “En,Ornament of An”. Compare to chapter 4.5.
[37] UrB, UrG, LaB, write euphemistically
instead “the beautiful place”. NiRR: “One of them has set down my meal (for the gods)”. NiA: “.....one
of them offered, on his account as if I had never lived there.”
[38] Literally: “Haven’t I not
lived there?”
[39] This version is in Text NiC and Text NiHHH, all other texts have one of the homophonic
expressions. NiRR writes “bitter”.
74. My fate with Suen and Lugal-Ane,
75. report it to An! May An resolve it for me!
76.
Report it to An immediately. An will resolve it for us!

78.
At her feet lie hostile land and flood.
79. She is truly mighty- she will make the town tremble before her.
80.
Go (before the court), so that she will be calm in her heart for me!"[40]
81. En-hedu-Ana am I, I will now
say a prayer to you.
82. My tears, like sweet beer
83. I now shed them freely for you, fate-determining Inana,
"Your judgement!" I will say to you. [41]
84. As for ASimbabbar, concern yourself not!
85. While changing
the purfication rites of the fate-determining An, he [42:Lugalane] altered everything for him,
86. he tore away
the Eana from An!
87. He showed no awe for the most venerable God (AN)!
88. This house, whose abundance he [43:AN]
was not sated with, whose beauty he had not tasted,

for him!

force them to surrender!

95. Enlil should curse it!
96. The
mother shall not soothe her crying child!
[40] In other
texts: "so that she calms her heart for me."
97. Queen! The laments which were struck up over the land, [46]
98. your ship of wailing should
be left behind in the enemy land! [47]
99. And because of my fate-determining song -- must I die? [48]
100.
I-- my Nanna has cared not for me [49].
101. In the rebellious land, they completely and utterly destroyed me.
102.
ASimbabbar most certainly has not passed a final judgement upon me!
103. Has he spoken it-- does it mean anything?
Has he not spoken it-- does it mean anything?
104. After he stood there in triumph, he expelled me from the
temple.
105. He made me fly like a swallow from the window- my life was consumed --[50]

go to the thorny undergrowth of the enemy land.

[49] UrB: "has not decided [my] verdict".
[50] NiU, NiDD: "He consumed my life."
[51]
UnB: "the right garment".
[52] 2nd Version: "This will be pushed against you (like horns of a bull)”.
[53]
This turn (idiom) is a regular formula of the heart-soothing of the gods, which in this context agrees with the similar
sounding: "may it be ... turned to its territories".
[54] NiRR:"The beloved wife of An [has...], beloved [ ] of
Ama[-sumgal-Ana]".
118. To the radiant bed [55], I did not stretch out my hand.

in various Inana-temples.
[61] Other texts:"May your heart be calmed/refreshed for me!"
[62] The meaning is
first of all the text of NMS itself; for a broader translation compare with Chapter 7.2.
143 The Queen, the strong one, the ruler over the gathering of the 'en' [63],
144 she did
accept her prayer and sacrifice [64] .
145 The heart of fate-determining Inana has turned to its place.
146
The light was sweet for her, delight was spread over her, full of abundant beauty was she.
147 As the light of
the rising moon (NANNA), she too was clothed in enchantment.
148 Nanna came out [65] to rightfully gaze (at her)
in awe,
149 (he and) her mother Ningal blessed her,
150 and then the gate post said unto her "Be hailed!"
151
What each said to the nugig is exalted.
152 Destroyer of enemy lands, endowed with the ME from An,
153 My
Queen, draped in enchantment, (to you) Inana be glory!
[63]
'en' is a title for priests and rulers.
[64] In Sumerian this is only one lexeme. (=word)
[65] Another
possible translation: (he) "led her out".
I have added a few explanations
of her research in italics beneath some of the footnotes. For those unfamiliar with the Sumerian terms, Dr. Zgoll’s
literary paraphrase will be most helpful and I will be posting it in the near futur. I have also taken the liberty
in presenting the long lines of the poem as shorter pairs of lines whenever possible, to facilitate reading the poem. ---------------------------------------
